Organization spotlight: Inkwell

In 1924 at a masquerade dinner party, two people died. They left the party as ghosts– one named Jebus and the other Jeapers. One day, Jebus found a letter from Jeapers, and the two became friends, writing back and forth to each other for a century.

That’s the lore behind Rhode Island College’s new organization: Inkwell. Inkwell is, on the surface, a pen-pal program. But there’s much more to it than that. Two writers (called ghosts) are paired at the start of the semester. They don’t know the identity of their other ghost, but after a semester of writing back and forth, there will be a final event where they will be able to guess who they’ve been paired with. It’s an immersive experience, complete with code-names, a discrete pick-up and drop-off system and plenty of events to participate in.

One of the biggest events this semester will be the organization’s Murder Mystery Masquerade Ball, taking place Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Already they’ve had a few events, including ghost games on the quad and mask-making sessions so that those attending the ball will be able to get into ‘spirit’ and continue to keep their identity hidden. The masquerade ball is an adorable link to their lore– it’s where their mascots originated and the reason they met. Hopefully, many ghosts will be able to interact with other ghosts to make new friends. Even if you’re unable to attend the events, participating will ensure you at least one new ghost friend. It’s a great way to get involved and meet new people, especially if you’re more introverted.

I spoke to Vice President Sarina. My biggest question was whether or not Inkwell will be happening next semester as well. I’m happy to say that Inkwell will be returning next semester. “I can second it will be happening next semester,” added Chris, secretary of Inkwell. So, if you were unable to participate this semester I recommend giving it a try next semester. For those worried about time commitment, it doesn’t take much time at all to write, read, pick-up or drop-off letters. You only have to send one letter per week.

Just like Jebus and Jeapers, I hope Inkwell continues to connect new friends for years to come. To keep up with Inkwell and their ghostly friends, see their Instagram.
