“Good Burger 2,” the sequel to the 1997 cult classic “Good Burger,” will be filming in Rhode Island starting May 18. Boston.com reports that filming will occur in various cities throughout the state, including North Providence, East Providence, Providence, East Greenwich and Warwick. A former Friendly’s located on Mineral Spring Avenue North Providence will be transformed into the film’s titular restaurant.
Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office Steven Feinberg’s connection to “Good Burger 2” producer John Ryan, Jr., who was born in Rhode Island, brought this movie to the Ocean State. Boston.com also reports that Feinberg and Ryan, Jr.’s mutual friend connected them and “Good Burger” star Kenan Thompson via Zoom. Rhode Island was finalized as the filming location soon thereafter.
Co-stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell announced the project on “The Tonight Show” last month. No plot details are known except for those mentioned in the movie’s official logline, which says, “Dexter Reed is down on his luck after another one of his inventions fails. Ed welcomes Dex back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.”
Based on a sketch from the Nickelodeon comedy show “All That,” “Good Burger” was released 25 years ago. Thompson and Mitchell star as Dexter and Ed, two teenage employees who try to save their titular workplace from closing down after a flashy competitor opens nearby. Thompson and Mitchell also starred in their own sitcom “Kenan & Kel,” which aired from 1996 to 2000. Since then, both actors have appeared on several shows, with Thompson being well known for his twenty-year-long run as a cast member on Saturday Night Live.
“Good Burger 2” will be released on Paramount+ later this year. A specific release date is currently unknown. The production is in need of extras and background actors.
