Dattco Motorcoach, a key provider of school bus services in Rhode Island is under scrutiny following a series of operational problems that have led to increased frustration. Dattco is newly contracted with the state to provide school bussing services for the 2024-2025 school year.

Over the past few months, residents across the state have reported significant issues with Dattco’s bus services, including delays and inconsistent schedules, as well as a general lack of communication. Part of this problem stems from the fact that there are not enough buses available.

In a letter from the ACLU of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Center for Justice addressed to Providence city officials and the Providence School Department, these issues were highlighted. These transportation problems are not only causing inconvenience but are also affecting students’ ability to attend school regularly as students have been arriving well after the school day starts, if they are even picked up at all. This letter emphasizes that these issues disproportionately impact low-income families and students with disabilities, exacerbating existing educational inequalities.

The ACLU and the Rhode Island Center for Justice are urging immediate action to address these transportation issues. They are calling for improved management and organization of the bus routes to ensure timely and consistent service, enhanced communication between the school department and families regarding bus schedules and delays and greater accountability for the transportation services to ensure they meet the needs of all students.

Families have reported poor communication from the school department regarding delays and route changes. The unreliable bus system is causing undue stress, especially for families with working parents who struggle to manage transportation issues. One solution suggested by the ACLU and the Center for Justice includes reimbursement for transportation costs for ride shares.

The letter also demands greater transparency from the Providence School Department regarding their efforts to resolve the transportation problems. It stresses the need for a clear plan and regular updates on progress. Better communication with families regarding bus schedules and any changes would involve more timely updates and clear information about delays and route adjustments.

There needs to be prompt action to address and rectify the transportation issues. This includes overhauling bus management and ensuring that buses run on time and follow their routes consistently. The Providence School Department needs to take responsibility and create a benchmark for success.
