Club spotlight: Harambee, RIC’s black student union

Harambee, a club focused on unity, empowerment and pride within RIC’s Black community, was established at Rhode Island College in 1978. Now, 47 years later, the club remains active and continues to foster an uplifting and supportive environment for students to celebrate their culture, connect with others and advocate for change, as president Yonas Dabi and social media personnel Ida Faye explain.

Dabi and Faye spoke to The Anchor Newspaper on behalf of Harambee, informing us about their organization, its goals, values and events.

“Harambee actively contributes to RIC’s community by creating a welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds,” they explained. “Through our events, discussions and collaborations we promote cultural awareness, amplify student voices and encourage unity across campus. Whether through educational panels or social events, we strive to make a lasting impact.” One of these events was called “An Evening of Black Excellence”, a networking dinner held at the Unity Center. This event helped students connect with Black RIC alumni, including Monica Paige, who was president of Harambee in 1996.

February was Black History Month, and Harambee hosted many events to celebrate. Throughout the whole month, they hosted a giveaway. By attending any of their events, students would receive a raffle ticket. The more events attended, the more chances students had to win prizes. Harambee hosted a plethora of events, from braiding 101, where Everything Braidss and Slayed by Felicia helped to improve skills and celebrate Black hair culture. Harambee hosted a screening of “Think Like a Man,” a romantic comedy with a predominantly Black cast, including Chris Brown and Kevin Hart. You may have noticed local Jamaican restaurant “Ja Patty” on the quad in February. This was also a Harambee event.

Harambee will be hosting a “paint your flag” event on April 3, from 5:30-7:30 in the Unity Center. This event will have free drinks and food, music and cultural celebration. This event is RSVP only, and limited spots are available, so be sure to visit the club on Instagram to sign up now.

Harambee is inclusive of all students. “We encourage all students to join us in fostering a stronger, more inclusive campus. No matter your background, you have a place with us!” Now, more than ever, Harambee is an important community aiding in the connection and strength of the community at RIC. It’s not surprising that Harambee has been around for nearly fifty years– it’s a beacon for the Black community and the unity created here at RIC.
